Statement by California Labor Federation Executive Secretary-Treasurer Art Pulaski
“In these times of crisis, California leaders must remember that working people make our state strong. We’ve seen countless examples of workers on the frontlines putting their health and safety at risk to ensure Californians are able to weather this pandemic. While COVID-19 has created monumental challenges for state and local budgets, the way forward is investment in our communities to rebuild economic strength.
“We mustn’t repeat past mistakes of austerity and job loss in the face of budget shortfalls. We can’t afford to further exacerbate inequality in a time of hardship, meaning we must ask the wealthiest among to pay their fair share. We have to rebuild together by investing in our safety net, and the workers and services that create the conditions for an equitable recovery. We’re encouraged to see Gov. Newsom’s addition of new revenue proposals to help stave off cuts to public safety, education and other vital programs.
“We appreciate the magnitude of challenges the governor faces in balancing a budget in a time of unprecedented economic crisis. We look forward to working with the governor and the legislature to craft solutions that put workers first on the path to economic recovery. We’ll keep fighting for the federal relief needed to give workers and their families the strong footing upon which to rebuild.”
