California Labor Federation Condemns Dangerous Dirty Campaign Tactics Targeting Liz Ortega-Toro

Sacramento, CA -The California Labor Federation condemns the egregious campaign mailers funded by the California Association of Realtors and the Building Industry Association that publicized the home address of Alameda Labor Council Leader and State Assembly Candidate Liz Ortega-Toro. At a time of unprecedented threats against elected officials and public figures, especially women and people of color, this attack is a blatant attempt to silence an outspoken leader.

“Strong women of color are too often the targets of this type of ugly politics,” said Lorena Gonzalez Fletcher, leader of the California Labor Federation. “This outrageous tactic by Shawn Kumagai’s supporters was reckless and absolutely unacceptable. His unwillingness to condemn the realtors and developers who mailed out Liz Ortega-Toro’s address just makes him complicit.”

Liz Ortega-Toro, labor leader, wife, and mother, is running to represent the 20th Assembly District. She’s spent her life fighting for workers to have good jobs and respect at work. If political opponents disagree with her on these core values, they should debate the issues without putting her family’s safety at risk.

Political consultants willing to engage in brazenly dangerous tactics are a threat to a civil democratic society. Bad actors who take on our leaders and violate the basic values upheld by the labor movement will be held accountable by any means necessary, including being placed on a Do Not Patronize list.
