California Labor Federation Condemns LA Violence Against Families and Members of the Press

Statement by California Labor Federation Executive Secretary-Treasurer Art Pulaski

“This past May Day, we remembered the millions of workers throughout the United States and around the world that have fought to make worksites safer and more just. It was in that spirit that thousands of working families turned out on Tuesday for peaceful rallies in Oakland, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and other cities across the state to show support for millions of immigrants who suffer injustice in the workplace and elsewhere.

“We are angered by reports that Los Angeles law enforcement officials began shooting the peaceful marchers in MacArthur Park with rubber bullets, and that many people, including members of the press, were injured by the violence.

“We join our brothers and sisters in Los Angeles and across the state in urging Los Angeles Mayor Villaraigosa and the Police Commission to investigate the aggressive actions of the LAPD and to take the appropriate measures to prevent similar incidents in the future. Innocent men, women and children should not have to endure the threat of bodily injury for wanting to improve the lives of all Californians.”
