President Trump released his federal budget proposal today, which includes deep cuts to many critical programs and departments, including a 21% cut to the Department of Labor, the agency tasked with protecting America’s workers
The cruelty of the Trump budget doesn’t reflect who we are as a nation and is counter to the values we embrace as Californians. Deep cuts to programs that keep low-income families afloat, ensure that workers aren’t cheated by their employers and support the arts and humanities would be devastating to all Americans.
The California labor movement calls on California’s congressional delegation to lead the charge against this inhumane budget. This budget should be a rallying cry for Californians of all political stripes to join together in opposition to cuts that would shred the very fabric of our state and country.
While it is our hope that Congress rejects the president’s devastating budget, California lawmakers must prepare to protect our state’s workers by bolstering our state’s safety net, labor law enforcement and job training programs.
