Toyota Announces Plans to Close NUMMI Auto Plant
Statement by California Labor Federation Executive Secretary-Treasurer Art Pulaski
“Toyota’s intention to close the NUMMI plant would have far-reaching consequences for thousands of workers, the California economy and our environment.
“With the loss of thousands of local jobs, the economic impact of this closure would be staggering. California is a critical market for Toyota, yet its intent to close its only California manufacturing plant would undoubtedly sink the state further into recession and exacerbate the economic insecurity of businesses and families.
“The plant closure would also have a negative impact on the environment as Toyota would be forced to import automobiles and parts from other areas around the country and the world to meet the demand in California for its cars. At a time when many companies are trying to reduce their impact on global warming, Toyota has chosen to do the opposite with this ill-advised closure.
“Toyota’s stunning decision to close the plant certainly could have been avoided. The United Autoworkers, the California Labor Federation and others have been working on incentives to keep the plant open. Despite these efforts, Toyota has callously turned its back on the NUMMI workers and communities they support.
“It’s appalling that the company plans to abandon its workers, the community and
commitment to the environment now. We urge the Toyota to reconsider its decision and honor its commitment to the plant and its award-winning workforce that have given so much to the company for so many years.”
